We believe that Barclays has a social and commercial responsibility to help customers and non-customers embrace the new digital environment and ensure that no one is left behind by the digital revolution. In support of the EU Digital and Jobs Coalition, Barclays will in 2017:

  • Expand our Digital Eagles programme (from 16,000 currently);
  • Teach basic coding to 45,000 children;
  • Assist 500,000 people with general digital skills;
  • Grow our UK Eagle Lab network by 50% and aim to double to 18 sites to support UK tech entrepreneurs;
  • Run a minimum of 500 webinars and face to face training events – covering cyber security, data analytics and digital marketing – for SMEs.

Barclays funds the vast majority of our activity, but we also partner with other organisations on discrete projects (e.g. Barclays and BT jointly funded the provision of free wifi in over 100 libraries across the UK).

At the heart of Barclays’ strategy is to build on our strength as a transatlantic consumer, corporate and investment bank anchored in our two home markets of the UK and the US.

Qualitative Impact

We aim to support economic growth and job creation through digital skills and confidence training.

• Digital Eagles – A free online tool to help people build their computing skills educate clients about digital marketing, cyber security and resilience.
• Digital Wings – An advanced free online course teaching teenagers and adults to use ICT.
• Tea and Teach – Helping elderly become more comfortable with using the internet
• Code Playgrounds – Teaching young people and their parents the basics of coding for free, using the coding platform Barclays developed.
• Eagle Labs – Spaces where entrepreneurs and communities can come to network, use high-tech manufacturing equipment and benefit from expert mentoring and coaching.

Separately through our flagship LifeSkills initiative, we also continue to help the next generation secure employment and manage their finances more effectively, with the number of young people participating in the programme since 2013 reaching over 1.8 million and almost 3,000 colleagues volunteering to run LifeSkills sessions last year.

We have been a member of the FTSE4Good index since its inception in 2001. We scored 81 out of 100 on the Environmental, Social and Governance Rating (relative to other companies in our sector).

1. Expand our Digital Eagles program (from 16,000 currently) – We now have 18,227 digital eagles (employees teaching digital skills). In addition, we are looking at an accreditation programme and deepen the skill set of this population.
2. Teach basic coding to 45,000 children - this is our code playground initiative, currently we have engaged 11,613 children
3. Assist 500,000+ people with general digital skills - this is our total engagements initiative and we are at 351,996 YTD (supported by 20,201 Physical Tea and Teach sessions)
4. Grow our UK Eagle Lab network by 50% and aim to double to 18 sites to support UK tech entrepreneurs – We ow have 13 Eagle Labs open or in build now.
5. Run a minimum of 500 webinars and face-to-face training events – covering cyber security, data analytics and digital marketing – for SMEs – We hosted 760 events (including webinars and face-to-face events)
